In the UK, where nearly one in five people volunteer regularly, the positive impact is felt throughout communities. Here at Cup-O-T, we are very proud to be supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who take part in a variety of activities that help the organisation.
Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time — it’s about making a lasting impact, building community, and developing your own skills.
The 2023 Time Well Spent survey by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) surveyed 7,000 adults in the UK and their findings showed that for over 40% of people their core motivation for starting volunteering was wanting to improve things or help people.
At Cup-O-T, we believe in our volunteers using their time with us to not only contribute to improving the lives of the young people we work with but for themselves as well to gain experience and enhance their skills.
Whether you want to give something back, develop new skills, or simply meet like-minded people, volunteering can be genuinely life-enhancing.

Top 5 Benefits of Volunteering

1. Learn New Skills and Gain Experience
Volunteering is a brilliant way to build new skills, whether you’re a student, changing careers, looking for work or retired. From teamwork and communication to problem-solving and leadership, you can develop transferable skills that look great on your CV.
At Cup-O-T, volunteers have the chance to gain hands-on experience in areas as different as social media and woodland maintenance.

2. Boost Your Wellbeing
Research shows that volunteering can help reduce stress, lift your mood, and ease symptoms of anxiety and depression. Helping others creates a sense of purpose and connection — not to mention the feel-good hormones like dopamine and oxytocin it releases.
“Over three-quarters of volunteers (77%) reported that volunteering improved their mental health and wellbeing.”

3. Meet New People
Volunteering brings together people from all walks of life. You’ll meet individuals who share your values, broaden your social circle, and often build lasting friendships. Working together on a shared mission is a great motivation. As well as meeting people through their volunteer role Cup-O-T volunteers are invited to attend team meetings, away days and celebrations to meet the wider team.
4. See the Difference You’re Making
When volunteering you have the opportunity to see and hear about the difference your contribution is making. Whether that’s helping someone directly, supporting a community event, or communicating our work to a wider audience. The sense of reward is real.
5. Feel Part of a Community
With many people feeling increasingly isolated or disconnected, volunteering is a meaningful way to feel rooted in your local area. You’ll become more aware of the issues facing your community and be part of the positive change.
