The Nutritional and Medicinal Value of Stinging Nettles

Hello! This month’s blog we want to share with you the wonders of the humble stinging nettle.

At Cup-O-T, we believe in the power of nature to heal and nourish. One remarkable plant that embodies this philosophy is the stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). Commonly found in fields, gardens, and woodlands, this plant is not only rich in nutrients but also offers numerous medicinal benefits – I’m going to share the hidden talents of the nettle with you here!

A Nutritional Powerhouse!

Stinging nettles are packed with essential vitamins and minerals. They contain vitamins A, C, K, and several B vitamins, as well as high levels of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium.

Remarkably, nettles boast up to 25% protein in their peak season, making them an excellent source of plant-based protein. This nutrient density makes stinging nettles one of the most nutritious plants available.

Culinary Uses

Nettles can be used in a variety of culinary dishes. They make a wonderful substitute for spinach and can be incorporated into soups, pestos, teas, smoothies, and even baked goods. Here are a few ideas:

Mental Health and Wellness

Foraging for nettles can be a therapeutic activity, fostering a deep connection with nature. Spending time in woodlands and natural settings has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall mental well-being. Incorporating nettles into your diet not only provides physical health benefits but also encourages a mindful approach to eating and wellness.

The achievement felt from picking (carefully!) and cooking or creating with nettles is incredible.

Practical Uses

Beyond their nutritional and medicinal value, nettles have practical applications. They can be used to make rope, natural dyes, and even a potent organic fertiliser. To make nettle fertiliser, simply steep chopped nettles in water for about a month and use the resulting liquid to nourish your plants.
