Discovery Group: Supporting Young People Build Confidence, Connection and Wellbeing

Discovery Group is a 6-week occupational therapy-based programme designed to support young people in developing practical skills, improving wellbeing, and building confidence through meaningful activity. Over the six weeks, young people are encouraged to explore different activities, reflect on what matters to them, and begin shaping routines that support their health and happiness.

The aim is simple but impactful – to help young people build independence, confidence, and a better quality of life through purposeful participation.

Who is it for?

Our current groups are funded by the South Norfolk and Broadland Health and Wellbeing Partnership as part of their commitment to improving mental health support and prevention in the local area. Cup-O-T is running sessions in two high schools and at our woodland.

Referrals are supported through schools, community organisations, social prescribers, and families, ensuring that young people who may benefit most can be identified and supported.

The group is designed for young people aged 13–16 who:

  • Are not currently receiving mental health support, or are on a waiting list
  • Are experiencing low mood or anxiety
  • Struggle with low self-esteem or confidence
  • Feel lonely or socially isolated
  • Feel disconnected from peers or their community

We have secured additional funding from Norfolk Community Foundation through the Brief Community Fund and Breckland Council Match Fund to run 3 more groups in the next academic year.

What makes the Discovery Group different?

Unlike traditional support programmes, Discovery Group is built around participation and choice. Young people are not passive recipients, they are active participants in shaping their experience.

Throughout the programme, they:

  • Explore a wide variety of activities
  • Learn how routines affect wellbeing
  • Discover what helps them feel better day-to-day
  • Build awareness of occupational roles (the different “parts” we play in life, like friend, student, team member, etc.)
  • Develop confidence in social situations
  • Work collaboratively with others in a supportive environment

Importantly, the young people help shape the direction of the group itself. Their feedback and experiences influence future sessions.

Recognising Achievement

At the end of the programme, young people receive certifications through the AQA Unit Award scheme. This provides formal recognition of their learning, participation and personal development throughout the group.

Shaping future support
